About the Amharic Language

Amharic (አማርኛ) is a Semitic language of the Afro-Asiatic family – a relative of Arabic and Hebrew – and the working language of the federal government of Ethiopia. After Arabic it is the most spoken Semitic language in the world. Amharic is written in the Ge'ez (Ethiopic) script, called ፊደል (fidel), in which every letter is a whole syllable: a consonant with one of seven vowels.
