About the Vietnamese Language

Vietnamese (Tiếng Việt) is an Austroasiatic language and the official language of Vietnam. It is a tonal language with six tones in the northern standard. Vietnamese is written in chữ Quốc ngữ, the Latin alphabet with many extra marks: some change a vowel (ă â ê ô ơ ư), and five show the tone. Before the 20th century Vietnamese was written with Chinese characters and the adapted script chữ Nôm, and about 60% of its vocabulary comes from Chinese.
