How to Join Consonants and Vowels to Make Sinhala Words
Sinhala is written in syllables. Every consonant has a built-in "a", so ක is read ka. A vowel sign (pilla) changes the vowel, and the al-lakuna (්) removes it.
Three rules to remember
- Consonant + vowel sign: ක + ා = කා (kā) – press l d.
- Sign written before: ක + ෙ = කෙ (ke) – drawn first, typed after the consonant – press l f.
- Al-lakuna removes the vowel: ක + ් = ක් (k) – press l a.
