How to Join Consonants and Vowels to Make Hindi Words

Hindi is written in syllables. Every consonant already contains a short "a" sound, so क is read ka. To write a different vowel after a consonant, you add a vowel sign called a matra (मात्रा). To join two consonants without a vowel between them, you use the halant (्), which turns the first letter into a half letter.

About the Hindi Language

Hindi (हिन्दी) is an Indo-Aryan language of the Indo-European family and the official language of the Government of India, used alongside English. It is written in the Devanagari script from left to right, and it is phonetic – words are written almost exactly as they are spoken. A Hindi sentence usually follows a subject–object–verb order (मैं पानी पीता हूँ – "I water drink"), and every noun is either masculine or feminine. Much of its vocabulary comes from Sanskrit, with many words borrowed from Persian, Arabic and English. In everyday speech Hindi is very close to Urdu – speakers of the two understand each other easily, although they are written in different scripts.
