How to Join Consonants and Vowels to Make Odia Words

Odia is written in syllables. Every consonant already contains a short "a" sound, so କ is read ka. A vowel sign (matra) changes that vowel, and the halanta (୍) joins two consonants into one letter.

About the Odia Language

Odia (ଓଡ଼ିଆ) is an Indo-Aryan language of the Indo-European family and the official language of Odisha in eastern India. It is written in the Odia script, famous for the round "umbrella" tops of its letters: the script grew up on palm leaves, where a straight headline would have split the leaf. Like Hindi and Bengali, Odia is phonetic and usually puts the verb at the end of the sentence (ମୁଁ ପାଣି ପିଏ – "I water drink"). In 2014 India recognised Odia as a classical language.
