How to Join Consonants and Vowels to Make Bengali Words
Bengali is written in syllables. Every consonant already contains a short vowel sound, so ক is read kô. To write a different vowel after a consonant, you add a vowel sign called a kar (কার) – া is ā-kar, ি is i-kar. To join two consonants without a vowel between them, you use the hasanta (্), which joins the first letter to the next one.
Three rules to remember
- Consonant + vowel sign: ক + া = কা (kā) – press k e.
- Type in the order you speak: the signs ি ে ৈ are written before the letter but typed after it – কি (ki) – press k f.
- Consonant + hasanta + consonant: ক্ + ষ = ক্ষ – press k d Shift+,.

About the Bengali Language
Bengali, or Bangla (বাংলা), is an Indo-Aryan language of the Indo-European family. It is the national language of Bangladesh and an official language of the Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura and the Barak Valley of Assam. It is written in the Bengali script, which, like Devanagari, hangs its letters from a line along the top. Bengali has no grammatical gender, usually puts the verb at the end of the sentence (আমি জল খাই – "I water drink"), and is famous for its poetry and songs: Rabindranath Tagore, who wrote in Bengali, won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 and wrote the national anthems of both India and Bangladesh.
