How to Join Consonants and Vowels to Make Assamese Words
Assamese is written in syllables. Every consonant already contains a short vowel, so ক is read kô. A vowel sign changes that vowel, and the hasanta (্) joins two consonants into one letter.
Three rules to remember
- Consonant + vowel sign: ক + া = কা (ka) – press k e.
- Type in the order you speak: the signs ি ে ৈ are written before the letter but typed after it – কি (ki) – press k f.
- Consonant + hasanta + consonant: ক্ + ষ = ক্ষ (khyô) – press k d Shift+,.
