How to Join Consonants and Vowels to Make Khmer Words

Khmer is written from left to right, usually without spaces between words. Vowel signs are written around the consonant, and the coeng (្) puts a second consonant under the first, as a small subscript letter.

About the Khmer Language

Khmer (ភាសាខ្មែរ) is an Austroasiatic language and the official language of Cambodia. Unlike Thai and Lao, it is not tonal. Khmer is written in the Khmer script, which descends from the Pallava script of South India and is famous for its many letters and its subscript consonants, written below other letters. Khmer has borrowed many words from Sanskrit and Pali, and the Angkor temples carry some of the oldest Khmer inscriptions.
