How to Join Consonants and Vowels to Make Manipuri Words
Meitei Mayek is written in syllables. Every consonant has a built-in "a", so ꯀ is read ka. A vowel sign (cheitap) changes the vowel, and special lonsum letters write a consonant at the end of a syllable.
Three rules to remember
- Consonant + vowel sign: ꯀ + ꯥ = ꯀꯥ (kā) – press k a.
- Lonsum letter at the end: ꯅꯍꯥ + ꯛ = ꯅꯍꯥꯛ (nahak, you) – type the lonsum with Ctrl or Alt – press n h a Alt+k.
- Apun iyek joins consonants: ꯁ + ꯭ + ꯀ = ꯁ꯭ꯀ (sk) – press s ; k.
