How to Join Consonants and Vowels to Make Sanskrit Words
Sanskrit is written in syllables. Every consonant already contains a short "a", so क is read ka. A vowel sign (mātrā) changes the vowel, and the virāma (्) removes it – Sanskrit words often end in a consonant with a virāma, such as अहम् (aham, I).
Three rules to remember
- Consonant + matra: क + ा = का (kā) – press k e.
- Type in the order you speak: the matra ि is written before the letter but typed after it – कि (ki) – press k f.
- Consonant + virāma: म + ् = म् – the ending of अहम् – press Shift+d u c d.
