How to Join Consonants and Vowels to Make Gujarati Words
Gujarati is written in syllables. Every consonant already contains a short "a" sound, so ક is read ka. To write a different vowel after a consonant, you add a vowel sign called a matra (માત્રા). To join two consonants without a vowel between them, you use the halant (્), which turns the first letter into a half letter.
Three rules to remember
- Consonant + matra: ક + ા = કા (kā) – press k e.
- Type in the order you speak: the matra િ is written before the letter but typed after it – કિ (ki) – press k f.
- Consonant + halant + consonant: ક્ + ષ = ક્ષ – press k d Shift+,.

About the Gujarati Language
Gujarati (ગુજરાતી) is an Indo-Aryan language of the Indo-European family and the official language of the state of Gujarat in western India. It is written in the Gujarati script, which developed from Devanagari and looks much like it – but without the line along the top of the letters. Like Hindi, Gujarati is phonetic, usually puts the verb at the end of the sentence (હું પાણી પીઉં છું – "I water drink") and has three grammatical genders: masculine, feminine and neuter. Its vocabulary comes mostly from Sanskrit, with many words from Persian, Arabic, Portuguese and English picked up through centuries of sea trade.

Where is Gujarati spoken?
Gujarati is spoken mainly in Gujarat and in Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, and by large communities in Mumbai and the rest of Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. World Gujarati Language Day (વિશ્વ ગુજરાતી ભાષા દિવસ) is celebrated on 24 August, the birthday of the poet Narmad, and Gujarat Day on 1 May marks the founding of the state in 1960.
