How to Join Consonants and Vowels to Make Punjabi Words

Punjabi is written in syllables. Every consonant already contains a short "a" sound, so ਕ is read ka. To write a different vowel after a consonant, you add a vowel sign – the lagan matran (ਲਗਾਂ ਮਾਤਰਾਂ). Gurmukhi rarely joins consonants; instead the addak (ੱ) doubles the next consonant, and the tippi (ੰ) and bindi (ਂ) add a nasal sound.

About the Punjabi Language

Punjabi (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ) is an Indo-Aryan language of the Indo-European family, the language of the Punjab region that is divided between India and Pakistan. In India it is written in the Gurmukhi script (ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ), in Pakistan in the Perso-Arabic Shahmukhi script. Punjabi is unusual among the large Indo-Aryan languages because it is tonal – the pitch of a syllable can change the meaning of a word. Like Hindi it usually puts the verb at the end (ਮੈਂ ਪਾਣੀ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ – "I water drink"), and its music, from folk songs to Bhangra, is loved around the world.
