How to Use the Telugu Keyboard

  1. Choose the layout. Keep Keyboard Type on Telugu – Inscript to type in Telugu, or switch to English – QWERTY for English.
  2. Or type in Roman letters. In English – QWERTY mode, type Telugu words the way they sound – for example namaste – and pick the Telugu word from the suggestions.
  3. Start typing. Click the keys of the on-screen keyboard with your mouse or finger, or type on your computer keyboard – each key produces the Telugu letter printed on it, for example k → క and e → ా.
  4. Use Shift and Caps Lock for more letters. They switch to the second set of characters – more consonants and the full vowels, such as ఖ, ఘ, ఆ and ఈ (Shift + k → ఖ).
  5. Use Ctrl or Alt for special characters. The third set holds the Telugu numerals ౧ ౨ ౩ and other signs.
  6. Type by voice. Click the microphone in the text box and speak in Telugu – your words appear as Telugu text (works in Chrome and Edge).
  7. Save or share your text. Use the toolbar above the text box to start a new text, download it as a .txt file, copy, print, share it on WhatsApp or by email, work in full screen, or translate it into English and other languages.

How to Join Consonants and Vowels to Make Telugu Words

Telugu is written in syllables. Every consonant already contains a short "a" sound, so క is read ka. To write a different vowel after a consonant, you add a vowel sign; together they are called guṇintālu (గుణింతాలు). To join two consonants, you use the pollu (్): the second consonant is then written small under the first, as an ottu.

About the Telugu Language

Telugu (తెలుగు) is a Dravidian language and the official language of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It is written in the rounded Telugu script, a close cousin of the Kannada script. Almost every Telugu word ends in a vowel, which gives the language a musical sound – a 15th-century Italian traveller called it "the Italian of the East". Like other Dravidian languages it puts the verb at the end (నేను నీళ్ళు తాగుతాను – "I water drink") and adds endings to words instead of using separate small words.
