How Kashmiri Letters Join to Make Words
Kashmiri is written from right to left in the Perso-Arabic script, and most letters join the letter after them. Unlike Urdu, Kashmiri writes many of its vowels with extra signs, such as ٕ and ٲ.
Three rules to remember
- Letters join: ک + ت + ا + ب = کتاب (kitāb, book) – press k t a b.
- Some letters never join the next one: ا د ڈ ذ ر ڑ ز ژ و join only to the letter before them – press d w r.
- Vowel signs: Kashmiri adds marks for its own vowels, as in کٲشُر (kạ̄shur, Kashmiri) – press k Shift+f x Shift+p r.
